Blade Runner Blaster Redux: Pre-Worldcon Sidkit

This is my second Blade Runner blaster kit. The first was a knockoff resin model I bought off ebay. This one is an all metal pre-Worldcon Sidkit (circa 2007) with machined steel barrel made by mspaw from the Propsummit forums. It also included an original binding post. I hope to round it out with a machined sight rod by mspaw and maybe a machined aluminum butt plate if I can find one.

I’m debating replacing the side screw with the Worldcon style the Weaver knob, but I can always change that later. I also will be heavily modifying the ammo clip to be as close to the actual prop as possible (I have also been toying with the idea of getting a more screen accurate ammo clip from Rich Coyle).

The progress so far:

The kit as I got it…

BR Vid-Phon is making a comeback!

UPDATE: My iPhone has taken a turn for the worst and now the wake sleep button doesn’t even work. It looks like this phone is destined for SMASHTOWN as soon as the Droid Incredible 2 launches….

First of all, no I won’t be updating BR Vid-Phon to work under iOS 4, the comeback I’m referring to is my descision to downgrade my 3Gs back to 3.1.3 and throw BR Vid-Phon back on.

A few months ago I decided that many of the features and reasons I wanted to jailbreak for originally had disappeared with many of the updates in iOS. So I went vanilla again. No jailbreak, no Cydia, no worries.

Wrong.

The headaches of updating and maintaining my jailbreaks was nothing compared to the horrible issues I have been having with my handset since I upgraded (specifically with version 4.2.1):

  • Everything is slower. A lot slower.
  • Loss of signal strength, and less options to troubleshoot my antennas.
  • Loss of battery life (it dies significantly faster now).
  • Infuriating random shut down/reboot/battery issues. The phone will often think it has been drained to the point that it refuses to boot up without being charged first, yet after just 30 seconds, will “remember” that is actually has 40%, 60% or even 80% charge…
  • BR Vid-Phon was cool.

So, hopefully by this time tomorrow I will have a fresh, fast, Blade Runner worthy handset.

Any of you out there having maddening issues with iOS 4 on your older device, I encourage you to step down again too. Hopefully I’m not the only one that sees the value of injecting my aging phone with new life again.

Custom Kindle Screensavers

I got a Kindle for my birthday! But, I couldn’t leave it unaltered. BEHOLD! My Blade Runner and Star Trek LCARS inspired custom screensavers! If you have a jailbroken Kindle (the easiest/least risky process ever!) feel free to snag these and drop them on your device!

Enjoy!

Blade Runner iPhone Skin

I’ve designed a vinyl skin to compliment my BR Vid-Phon winterboard theme. It should be available via Skinit.com in the next couple months. Check back here for updates. And while you’re waiting here’s a sneak peek:

**As far as I know the grafitti in this skin should be actual Chinese profanity, so I apologize to anyone it might offend!**

Custom Boot Logo

This will require you to create a new custom .ipsw with Pwnage Tool and add this logo in Expert setup mode. There are already some good tutorials out there.

And, here’s a Recovery logo:

BR Vid-Phon Setup Walkthrough v1.2

[NOTICE: While I totally appreciate people installing BR Vid-Phon, iOS4 does some wonky things to it. I don't currently have plans to make it iOS4 compatible (I'm not even sure it's possible). It is only 100% compatible up to version 3.1.3]

This is a detailed walkthrough for setting up the BR Vid-Phon theme based on the pay phones from Blade Runner. You can find screenshots here.

(For experienced users who don’t mind going through the hassle of jailbreaking all over again or who haven’t upgraded to 3.1.2 yet, this version includes a custom boot logo for you. You have to add it when you build your custom .ipsw with Pwnage. If you don’t know what that means, I don’t recommend trying it.)

BR Vid-Phon v. 1.0

BR Vid-Phon has been submitted for hosting at ModMyi. Provided I didn’t make any tragic mistakes, it should be live very soon. I will add a direct link to the Cydia page to the BR Vid-Phon website as soon as it’s ready.

Yay!

BR Vid-Phon Theme Official Site

I have whipped up a website for my theme, in preparation for hosting. All future news, updates and screenshots will be listed there.

New Main Screen Icons

The icons I had were just taken from someone else’s theme with circles around them. This is my new icon set for the home screen. Five of them are actual logos, which I thought would be kinda fitting on a payphone (Actually 6 if you count the OLPC Calculator). Rand McNally sponsored map search, International Paper notes…well you get the idea. Someone told me I need to throw a Coke advertisement somewhere on the theme. I’m still debating that.
