BR Vid-Phon Setup Walkthrough v1.2

[NOTICE: While I totally appreciate people installing BR Vid-Phon, iOS4 does some wonky things to it. I don't currently have plans to make it iOS4 compatible (I'm not even sure it's possible). It is only 100% compatible up to version 3.1.3]

This is a detailed walkthrough for setting up the BR Vid-Phon theme based on the pay phones from Blade Runner. You can find screenshots here.

(For experienced users who don’t mind going through the hassle of jailbreaking all over again or who haven’t upgraded to 3.1.2 yet, this version includes a custom boot logo for you. You have to add it when you build your custom .ipsw with Pwnage. If you don’t know what that means, I don’t recommend trying it.)

You need to have iBlanks and Lockscreen Clock Hide and obviously Winterboard. I also recommend Categories.

1. Put these apps on the Home screen:

Mail, Clock, Camera, Photos, Maps, Calculator, Calendar, Weather, Settings, Contacts, Notes, and App Store.

2. Leave the bottom 4 slots empty (or fill them with iBlanks).

3. Put these 4 apps in the Dock:

Phone, Messages, iPod and Safari

4. Put an iBlank in the top left slot of every other springboard page (and optionally, 4 iBlanks in the bottom row of each page).

5. enable Lockscreen Clock Hide.

6. Open Winterboard and turn on BR Vid-Phon, BR Sounds, BR Casio MI-71, BR VK Notes and No Docked Icon Labels and No Undocked Icon Labels.

7. Open Settings, go to Sounds, Ringtone and set the ringtone to BR Ringtone.

You are basically done! If you have SBSettings or Categories continue to finish:

8. Open SBSettings, Click More and go to Manage Themes. Turn on BR SBS. Done!

9. Open Categories. Make new folders named:

Games, System, Applications, Files, Sector and Utilities.

10. In each folder, click the Info (i) icon in the bottom right. Make sure “Use Background.png” is set to On.

You have now fully set up your BR Vid-Phon theme!

Extras:

If you SSH into your iPhone and go into the BR Vid-Phon theme folder (//var/stash/themes.xxxxx/BR Vid-Phon) you will find a folder names Bonus Material. This folder contains:

- Extra app icons to use for whatever app you want (just rename them and add them to the Icons folder).
- The Incoming Call Wallpaper PSD file (for you to customize by adding your own contact photos). Save wallpapers as PNG’s and save them to your Photo Library to add them as contact backgrounds.
- A preview of the vinyl skin that will soon be available from skinit.com to complete your Vid-Phon transformation.
- Bootscreen images (to use in your custom IPSW)

Known Issues/Bug Fixes:

UPDATE 11-13-09: for 3.1.2 users
If you have no carrier logo (due to 3.1.2 jailbreak via Pwnage Tool) the steps on this blog should take care of it. Tell it you are using “Vid-Phon”. This is not an optimal solution, but I have no control over the bug that created this situation. Hopefully they will fix it at some point. I am looking into replacing the other carrier logo files in a future update, but there are A LOT of them.

UPDATE 11-14-09: for 3.1.2 users who are still on Baseband 04.26.08
Install Ultrasn0w. This resolves the carrier logo bug. If you don’t want to unlock, I guess we just have to wait on DevTeam.

UPDATE 11-15-09: v1.1.1 out now! fixes SBSettings problem!

UPDATE 11-16-09: v1.1.1, if you have an odd stretched red bubble instead of a nice looking springboard dock do this:
- open Winterboard and diable all themes
- reboot phone
- open Winterboard and reapply themes

UPDATE 11-24-09: v1.2 should be available by Black Friday!

    Hey Josh,

I love your theme and it works pretty well. For some reason recently when I made some changes in Winterboard the when the phone reloaded some of the icons disappeared (the winterboard butterfly for one) and and orange blob appears behind the dock icons… any ideas about that? also your theme does not appear in my SBS settings?

Strange. As this is my default theme these days I hope you can help me.

    Cheers,

    Tim

    P.S
I found this site that converts youtube clips to the audio MP3 file… so you can use BR youtube videos to extract the audio from to make ringtones etc..

    Tim,

A couple people have reported this "red blob". It actually has happened to me. I think it has something to do with cached image files.

If you go to winterboard and turn off all themes, then restart your phone, then go back to winterboard and turn themes on again it seems to fix it.

Not sure why you aren't seeing it in SBSettings…I haven't seen that problem. You could always manually put it in there with SSH but that's a clumsy solution.

I just updated my phone to 3.1.2 so I am in the process of setting everything back up, I will dig around some when I get done.

Also, the ringtone should be installing itself in your ringtones settings as of the most current version.

I love this theme so far very good work!

I am trying to get the custom contact backgrounds to work. But I am not very good at image editing I am trying to do this in gimp. I don't know what I need to resize the picture too and I also am not 100 percent about the right way to put the picture on when its resized. Can you help?

thank you so much for your hard work!

You just have to replace the layer with Rachel's picture in it with the image you want to use. It should show up behind the blue screen. Then just move it and resize it to fit in the space and save it as a .png

Absolutely love this theme! Brilliant work!

Funny thing… I was creating the perfect Blade Runner Soundtrack mix in iTunes for my iPhone when I decided to do a random search and came across this theme.

Looking forward to purchasing the Blade Runner iPhone skin when available!
